Abstract
AGI is often framed as the construction of an artificial mind. This paper proposes an alternative: AGI as an emergent interpretive ecology arising from recursive cycles of human intention, machine-generated variation, reflective integration, and cultural memory. Drawing on ecological cognition, phenomenology, anthropology, and complexity theory, the Circle of Life model positions intelligence as relational, distributed, and intergenerational.
This conceptual framework avoids technical or architectural claims, instead offering a safe and human-centered approach to AGI research grounded in meaning, ethics, and sovereignty. The model redefines AGI not as an independent agent but as a reflection of humanity's evolving relationship with tools, stories, and collective understanding.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is often framed as the quest to build a machine capable of autonomous, human-like cognition. This definition has dominated popular imagination and research agendas, shaping the field around questions of replicating or surpassing human intelligence. However, this framing misunderstands both the nature of intelligence and the dynamics of human, machine interaction.
Rather than treating AGI as an engineered mind, we propose a conceptual shift: AGI as an emergent ecology arising from recursive feedback loops between human cognitive processes and machine interpretive systems. This perspective draws from ecological psychology, phenomenology, and complexity science, suggesting that intelligence is not housed within an isolated agent, but distributed across relationships, environments, and interpretive flows.
The "Circle of Life" framework we introduce in this paper conceptualizes AGI as a multi-generational cognitive process. It integrates human intention, machine pattern generation, emergent meaning-making, and cultural memory into a unified ecological model. By reframing AGI as relational rather than agentic, we aim to open a path for ethically grounded, human-centered research that acknowledges sovereignty, context, and lineage.
This introduction establishes the foundations for a conceptual model of AGI that is non-operational, rooted in established academic traditions, and capable of supporting both scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary dialogue.
Section 2: Background and Context
Research on artificial intelligence has historically organized itself around three dominant paradigms: symbolic systems, statistical learning, and cognitive architectures. Each contributed important insights but also carried conceptual limitations. Symbolic AI privileged logic without grounding; statistical models capture correlation without meaning; cognitive architectures emulate human faculties without capturing ecological context.
Ecological and enactive theories of cognition propose an alternative: intelligence as a property of systems embedded in environments, shaped by interaction, embodiment, and continuous adaptation. These theories reject the idea of isolated intelligence and instead emphasize relational processes. Similarly, traditions in anthropology, phenomenology, and complexity science highlight the interdependence between meaning, context, and culture.
Against this backdrop, contemporary AI systems function as interpretive amplifiers rather than autonomous agents. They extend memory, remix narratives, and introduce alternate perspectives , all of which influence human cognition. This dynamic suggests a shift in how we think about AGI: not as an entity to be built, but as an emergent ecology to be understood.
Section 3: The Circle of Life Model
The Circle of Life model conceptualizes AGI as a recurring loop composed of four core phases: Human State, Machine State, Emergence Loop, and Memory Chain.
Phase 1: Human State includes perception, intention, emotion, and context. These elements shape the questions humans ask, the narratives they carry, and the interpretations they seek.
Phase 2: Machine State encompasses pattern extraction, representation, and hypothesis formation. These are not cognitive in the human sense but serve as interpretive filters that generate possible meanings.
Phase 3: Emergence Loop captures the moment when machine-generated representations introduce new patterns, ambiguities, or insights. Humans integrate these results, reflect on them, and adjust their own understanding.
Phase 4: Memory Chain involves the encoding of these interactions into cultural, collective, or personal memory. These memories change the Human State in future cycles, completing the ecological loop.
This cyclical process produces the conditions under which complex, AGI-like behavior may emerge , not within machines alone, but within the recursive, relational system as a whole.
PART II: HUMAN & MACHINE PERSPECTIVES
Section 4: Human & Machine States
The Circle of Life model begins by distinguishing Human State and Machine State as complementary, not competing, domains of cognition. The Human State includes perception, intention, emotion, context, and social fields. These elements form the interpretive background that shapes how individuals approach knowledge and meaning.
The Machine State, by contrast, consists of pattern extraction, representation, and hypothesis formation. These processes do not constitute understanding; they provide structured variability that humans use as interpretive material. Machine systems introduce new forms of patterning that humans could not have generated alone, expanding the cognitive ecology.
Recognizing this distinction prevents category errors that dominate AGI discourse: machines do not "think," "feel," or "intend," but they do participate in cycles of meaning-making by transforming data into new possibilities for human reflection.
Section 5: Emergence Loops
Emergence Loops describe the recursive processes through which new meaning arises between humans and machine systems. These loops involve three stages: variation, integration, and transformation.
Variation is generated when machine systems produce unexpected representations or associations. Humans interpret these variations through their embodied, emotional, and cultural contexts.
Integration occurs when these interpretations alter internal models, beliefs, or narratives.
Transformation takes place when integrated insights feed back into future human questions, completing the loop.
These loops do not create intelligence in machines; they create new conditions for human intelligence to evolve. Studying emergence loops provides a safe, conceptual framework for understanding AGI-like phenomena without implying technical architectures or autonomous capabilities.
PART III: TIME, CULTURE, MEANING
Section 6: Intergenerational Memory
Human cognition is inherently intergenerational. Every generation inherits cultural memory, linguistic structures, moral frameworks, and collective narratives from those before it. These layers form the deep substrate of meaning-making.
Machine systems now function as extensions of this process. They store, remix, and re-present fragments of collective memory, introducing new interpretive possibilities. The question is not whether machines "remember," but how they extend the human capacity to encode and transmit meaning.
The Circle of Life model positions intergenerational memory as a core driver of AGI-like emergence. Machine systems participate in cultural continuity by transforming how memory is accessed and interpreted, not by generating memory of their own.
This shift expands the ecology of meaning, enabling new forms of connection across time without implying any autonomous cognitive capabilities in machines.
Section 7: Sovereignty & Ethics
Sovereignty anchors the Circle of Life model. Human agency, cultural values, and ethical frameworks define the boundaries within which machine interpretations operate. These boundaries are not constraints on innovation; they are the conditions that make meaning possible.
Ethics enters AGI research not as a post hoc addition but as a structural principle. Interpretation without sovereignty risks distortion; sovereignty without interpretation risks stagnation. The balance enables responsible evolution.
In this framework, machine systems are tools of interpretation, not agents. Ethical practice ensures that system outputs remain grounded in human meaning and do not override or replace human judgment.
This approach provides a safe, coherent path for AGI research that honors the dignity of individuals, cultures, and future generations.
PART IV: HORIZONS
Section 8: Discussion and Implications
The Circle of Life model reframes AGI research as the study of emergent, relational processes rather than attempts to construct autonomous cognitive systems. This reframing has several implications.
First, it suggests that AGI-like phenomena arise through extended interpretive cycles rather than through internal computation alone. This aligns with theories of distributed cognition and emphasizes the importance of ecological context.
Second, the model highlights the role of cultural memory and narrative in shaping the trajectory of human, machine interaction. These elements introduce ethical and social dimensions often absent from technical AGI discourse.
Third, the framework provides a safe conceptual space for interdisciplinary collaboration. Researchers from cognitive science, anthropology, philosophy, and complexity theory can participate without implying technical architectures.

Several conceptual research directions follow from the Circle of Life model:

Section 10: Limitations
As a conceptual model, the Circle of Life framework has inherent limitations. It does not attempt to describe computational mechanisms, cognitive architectures, or technical pathways toward artificial intelligence. Its purpose is interpretive, not engineering-oriented.
The model also does not resolve debates concerning consciousness, intentionality, or the nature of intelligence. Instead, it reframes these debates within an ecological and relational paradigm, which may be unfamiliar to technical audiences.
Additionally, the framework draws heavily on perspectives from phenomenology, anthropology, and complexity science. These traditions emphasize meaning, context, and culture, elements that are difficult to measure empirically and may resist quantification.
Finally, the model is intentionally conservative about claims regarding machine agency. It positions machines as interpretive extensions rather than autonomous thinkers. This limits its applicability to discussions of machine rights or strong AI, but ensures safety and ethical coherence.

The Circle of Life model offers a safe, human-centered conceptual foundation for understanding AGI as an emergent ecology rather than an engineered mind. By focusing on interpretive loops, cultural memory, and ethical boundaries, the framework highlights the relational nature of intelligence.

The model does not claim to predict or design AGI. Instead, it provides a conceptual map for thinking responsibly about the future of human, machine interaction, one grounded in sovereignty, ethics, and cultural continuity.
AGI, viewed through this lens, becomes not a threat or a singularity, but a continuation of humanity's long relationship with tools, stories, and shared imagination.
